Revelation 3:20 (NKJV)
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”
Have you ever heard of the saying that you have to watch for opportunities knocking at your door? Do you remember how you were told you should be doing it? Maybe it wasn’t something you were told exactly, but part of a class in school or a suggestion on how we are supposed to be planning for the future?
Successfully making your way through this life can be a very complicated undertaking. Even when we try to plan, we never really know how everything will end or play out. We find out that life is more fluid than anyone ever warned us about. Then after any number of failures or detours we become apprehensive and may give up entirely.
When we look for information, we will find that there are a world full of experts who want to tell you what to do. You can find endless videos on looking for your opportunity, make your own opportunities, or even the steps for success. But no matter how many books you read or videos you watch, it never really happens the way they say.
Sure, there may be parts that are close to what you need or the information may set certain things in motion. However, our situation or journey is not the same one that they went through. Plus, there is no guarantee that the forces which aligned for them will align the same way for us and bring the same results.
There are two things that I can agree on with the experts. You do have to keep your eyes open for any number of things to happen. From opportunities to better situations, or even a place where you can finally take a breath which may be what we are trying to find. And we need to keep moving forward through any obstacle or detour we encounter. We cannot stop seeking what we need or where we need to be. Again, we cannot stop moving. Once we do, any situation can get worse or we can stagnate with no moves being made.
We all should have things we want out of our lives or the bigger dreams that we long for. If we don’t, then we need to start there to figure out why and where we want to be. If we are that far down, we need to take that first breath to summon the strength we need to rise up to start finding a path forward.
I have run the rollercoaster of having the highs of an elated sense of optimism about my future to the dragging along the ground dread of not wanting to get out of bed. I have learned over the years that I cannot forget these experiences so I can avoid more of the lows and aim for the positives that keep my emotions elevated. I have also seen that I find more peace and happiness when I keep my thoughts on Jesus.
I can say that I have seen the difference that this can make when I was going through different periods of my life. But it did take me years to finally realize what I was witnessing. The Lord was always there watching over me and available. I was all too often trying to control everything myself to the point of being overwhelmed at times.
Over the past year there was quite a build-up of issues that had to be addressed. I had to take the time to slow down to plan a way forward before I let the pressure implode me. I had to consciously seek the Lord as in Luke 11:9-10, “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
Although I have used it before, I was educated in the meaning of this well know scripture. I had to seek the Lord, I had to seek and then seize the opportunity for Him to bring me comfort, guidance, and peace. I too often forget this and rather try to handle everything myself. I’m sure I am not the only one who does this.
When we do, we let our pride, our ego drown out the Lord knocking as in the opening scripture. It is bad enough that we let the world distract us from the presence of the Lord. Our ears cannot hear, our eyes cannot see, and our heart cannot feel Him there.
We need to keep His word in our hearts and on our lips to see His promise in the popular scripture Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, “says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” God knows everyone of us and has a plan for us which is always on time even though we can get impatient.
Besides seeking the Lord, we need to take the time to understand His guidance. This is not that easy in a fast-paced world and can take tremendous perseverance as His plans unfold.
We can find an example of this in Ephesians 5:15-17, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Be cautious of the world around us as we take the time to understand what doors are there to be opened in His name.
So, join me in answering the door when the Lord knocks. Invite Him into your heart and home. Then listen as He speaks to show you the plans and opportunities that are there for you. And we have to remember to give thanks in all that we do. Amen.
HOW WE SHOULD BE LIVIN’
When we are looking for opportunities some can be close at hand,
Many can slip right through our fingers like trying to hold on to sand.
We have to be careful when they come so we don’t miss our chance,
At times we may have to let go or hold on to take a stance.
It is still not easy to hear the knock when they are at the door,
Or even to open it when we do for fear of failure like before.
There may be a need for extra strength so we can move forward,
This is when we should bow our heads and call upon the Lord.
He is there to hear our cry for strength and what to do,
Even if it is to let go or what we should be holding on to.
His guidance does start within his Word and the lessons that he taught,
And with His ultimate sacrifice for all of us should never be forgot.
An easy place for us to begin is by starting our day with prayer,
To praise the life that is still given and for always being there.
With the Lord in our hearts we can always make the most of what is given,
And be His example for all those who see of How We Should Be Livin’.
