Ephesians 1:7 (NKJV)
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”
What if someone came to you and said they would pay off your mortgage or car loan? How about getting called into your boss’s office because you messed up something and he said don’t worry about it, try not to let it happen again? Maybe you caused a car accident, and your insurance company said it wasn’t going to raise your rate?
These may only be a few of the situations where it may be strange for someone to tell you that what you did or owed was behind you now. No matter the circumstance, we would probably not hesitate to accept their offer. We may want an explanation to clear up our confusion, but in the end we would most likely relent.
Sometimes there may be a correlation that gives you a path that could get your debt paid faster or information that could absolve you. A bank could run a special on financing for a certain time if you pay within a certain timeframe, or maybe a portion will be removed if you meet certain conditions. There could even be new information or a witness that changes your part in a situation, but most of the time these scenarios are unlikely.
Many of us may spend time looking for a short cut or way to wiggle out of what we owe or that confrontation we created. It is difficult to go against human nature that says we should not take full responsibility for everything that we do because of how uncomfortable we feel at times. It makes us not want to hand over that money month after month or step up to say it was me.
The trouble is that our emotions can be a stumbling block. We trust when we should be wary, we push when we should pause, or we jump without a lifeline. We want what others have or to feel good without having to think things through or worry about any repercussions that go with it. Instead, we lean on a planning strategy of, I can always find the money to pay for it or I can always talk my way out of it.
The bottom line is that the world is full of people pursuing what the world has to offer. We could see a different way forward if we let go of these pursuits and turn our eyes to our heavenly father. But this path is not any easier because we can feel that we don’t deserve to be forgiven for all the horrible things that we have done.
We can accept our boss telling us it’s alright when we say it was us who caused an issue, but not one from the only one who really matters. You have to ask yourself why. The world attaches labels and thrives on inducing stigma to the point where we feel worthless and not worthy. But our Lord and Savior does not care about any of it. If we come to Him, He will forgive.
The best analogy I ever heard was that a young man dies and find himself in a white room. He was handed a stack of sticky notes and instructed to write down all his sins then place the sticky note on the wall. Soon hundreds were stuck to the walls as he walked up to the man at the desk with his head down. The man at the desk asks, “with everything you have written down, do you feel you should go onto heaven?” The young man meekly whispers, “No.”
“Why not?”
“I have done horrible things throughout my life.”
“Did you confess your sins and accept Jesus into your heart.”
“Yes.”
“Then turn around and look behind you.
The young man began to cry because Jesus was signing his name on each sticky note and removing it from the wall.
We may not feel worthy of forgiveness, but the Lord taught what is repeated in Romans 10:9, “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” We start by confessing our sins to the Lord. But not in a way that is like telling someone what they want to hear, do it earnestly from the heart.
As we see in the opening scripture, through Jesus’ blood we have redemption and forgiveness of sins. All those transgressions that make us feel unworthy are wiped away.
This was even so in 2 Chronicles 7:14 of the Old Testament, “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” But the message wasn’t received as whole heartedly as it was after Jesus reiterated it.
These Words were repeated consistently by the disciples that Jesus sent into the world after His ascension. Beginning as the first church was being formed in Acts 3:19, “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord”
And by one who closely walked with Christ while he lived, 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Whether you use the word repent or confess, it leads to the same place or forgiveness.
Imagine you are accepting that loan forgiveness being offered by your local bank and accept the Lords free offer of sin forgiveness. Let go and fall to your knees in thankfulness as he signs and removes every sticky note you wrote your sins on.
There are so many things piling up that I have to pay back,
But resources are getting stretched thinner and funds I surely lack.
Sometimes I also create situations that cannot be repaid,
I have to hope that as time goes by that the memory will fade.
Unfortunately, the guilt won’t quit because of everything that’s owed,
Pushing me ever closer to the edge with my brain on overload.
The dark clouds are getting thicker, bringing with it the dark,
Lord, help me find my way forward and on a new path embark.
Dear child, your eyes are only shaded, just open them to see,
The way that you should be going and the place you need to be.
You are holding on to feelings that are based on worldly possessions,
All these can be released through your sincere confessions.
Don’t keep carrying those stones of regret, despair, or loss,
I have taken all the burden from you when I hung upon the cross.
Take time to read and follow my Word on how you should be livin’,
It’s time to let go of all that weight and accept that you are forgiven.
