Genesis 1:31 (NKJV)
“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So, the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”
Have you ever been stuck in the middle in an uncomfortable place like the center seat on an airplane? Maybe you were the middle child of three siblings and got blamed for everything that happened? How about lately, being in the center of political opinion where you cannot agree with either side?
We can find ourselves in the middle of many things these days. You can be neither the tallest nor shortest in your family or group. In the middle of a crowd where you are shoulder to shoulder and you can’t move in any direction. We could even be stuck in the center lane of traffic without a chance to get over to pass or make the next exit.
I bet if we really think about it we can come up with many more examples. But if we take everything we are facing and all the people away, we would still find ourselves in the middle of this great big world. No matter where you are you can look around to find even more items to put on the list to make this true.
Mountains, buildings, and trees rise up around us. The daytime sky with clouds or the nighttime one with stars or more clouds is ever present above us. Just the enormity of the world itself. You can begin with everything that rises right in your local area or sprawls out nearby to all the faraway places in the US or abroad.
If you cast your eyes lower you would find plants, flowers, and blades of grass in the yard. Pets, other animals, and insects that crawl. The smaller world is as expansive as the larger one, especially when we look further. We may have the entire earth and the universe that stretches farther than the mind can fathom, but there are so many layers that our eyes cannot see without the aid of scientific instruments.
There are also the forces at work the govern both of these worlds. Invisible forces that you could spend years trying to understand. What is gravity? How does the weather work? How do our bodies work? What is conception? How many stars in the sky? How deep are the oceans? Internal combustion, electricity, running water, nuclear fusion….. The questions can go on and on.
There may be many questions with so much information to explain it, that we can easily become overwhelmed. As I alluded to at the beginning, we as humans are in the middle of everything. Once we come to this realization, we need to figure out how we feel about it. We can embrace it or like I just mentioned, let it overwhelm us, crush us, or completely bury us in depression or anxiety.
I have tried both successfully and very unsuccessfully to understand these physical aspects of the world around us. It was not until I realized that I had to stop listening to all the theorists and doomsayers and follow my faith more. Someone once asked me to compare the theories of the big bang and evolution to the story of creation from the bible.
The universe exploded into existence from matter the size of the head of a pin and it took billions of years for everything to evolve through abiogenesis and monkeys to this point or there was a grand designer and craftsman who created the heavens and everything on earth. My money is more on the creator than all of the intricate operating systems in nature and our bodies just happened by chance.
I can see designs that were carefully assembled not just happenstance that has worse odds than winning the lottery. I can see God stepping back like any other artist and reacting as in the opening scripture. It was very good. We have all done this after a project that we worked on.
To follow that up, God declared in Isaiah 45:12, “I have made the earth, and created man on it. I, my hands, stretched out the heavens, and all their host I have commanded. He is asserting His place as the sole creator and ruler of this world. He is in charge and says how things work. I know that I do not have a strong argument against this.
However, the next disagreement can easily come about faith itself. I do not understand or I cannot see, can lead the way to prove it to me. Romans 1:20 has you look closer, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse” You can see this if you really look with an open mind and heart.
You have to ask yourself what you believe. I know I believe that God created the heavens and the earth and in Lord Jesus Christ who came to earth to save mankind. I have been forgiven and have a place with the Lord in Heaven after I die. This also helps me find some peace, rather than letting the fears and anxieties of the world come creeping in.
So, join me in counting our blessings for all that God has given us. Let us acknowledge Him as the provider and creator as in Psalm 104:24, “O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions.” Even though we are in the middle of both the large and the small in His world, rejoice and praise His name.
THE WONDER OF IT ALL
Looking at this great big world can make me feel so small,
Then I close my eyes and try to figure out the wonder of it all.
My mind goes from the mighty mountains to sand upon the beach,
Picturing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset to the stars high out of reach.
Even if we just stay closer by there is still so much to see,
The world comes to life with blooming flowers and blossoming cherry trees.
But there even is a smaller world hidden below the surface,
The way everything is put together and works for its designed purpose.
There are so many intricate layers on which our world is built,
Because even after the landscape gets greener it will soon begin to wilt.
We may have the miracle of life itself as a child grows within a womb,
With each of us then walking a different path before we lie inside our tomb.
But all the forces that control our fate are usually more behind the scene,
From the weather that affects the world around us to the coding of our genes.
We cannot deny there was no creator with the detail by which we were made,
Thank the Lord for all he has given us, fore it can never be repaid.
