ANCHOR IN THE STORM

Psalm 107:28-30 (NKJV)

“Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, so that its waves are still. Then they are glad because they are quiet; so, He guides them to their desired haven.”

Have you ever been in the middle of a violent storm? Maybe you were enjoying the outside or on a boat and suddenly the wind and the rain let loose? How about an ice storm that won’t let up until your world is covered in a layer of thick ice?

Many of us have a lot of experience dancing through all types of weather. Everything from severe summer thunderstorms to the many levels of the frozen winter tundra. But the storms in nature may not be much different from the ones that we can face in our lives.

We can all face problems or stressful situations, but chaotic over the top storms can hit us in life as they do the world around us. That phone call from the doctor with the bad news after your car breaks down can be like the severe winds that come roaring through during a heavy downpour. You can layer any number of unplanned and unexpected events to get that truly horrendous situation that can bring you to your knees.

Some of us have become experts handling chaos from years of experience and having tried countless unproductive solutions. But solving the crisis is only half the battle. We need to navigate all the hazards without getting battered along the way and not succumbing to the turmoil that is tossing our emotions like a boat during a storm.

Finding something to latch onto so we don’t drift away can be one of the most difficult things to do. Some of us may have that go to person who is always there to cling to or is a steady voice that is like a lifeline. Far too often we try to handle all the forces swirling around us ourselves and end up being tossed unmercifully in different directions.

I have found myself standing in the middle of a chaotic situation and found nothing to anchor me. The stress, anxiety, and frustration building until I felt I had no control over anything. Mind racing and thoughts spinning with no solution or relief on the horizon.

It’s been two years already since a close loved one was in the emergency room facing a dire diagnosis. The final news was not good, but there was hope of a treatment. While I was trying to coordinate taking care of the rest of the family my vehicle came up with a costly repair. I was not even sure which way to turn as I was beginning to feel swept away.

I started with a close friend who could not help because of where they lived, but talking some things through and lots of prayers started to slow things down. Even though I only had a few answers, I knew I had a beginning with the Lord.

I had to do what the opening scripture says, I had to cry out to the Lord. It was not easy to let go of all my troubles, but I did. Sometimes I do have control issues. Honestly, it can be more than sometimes. I like planning, I like taking charge, and I like executing to see results. But with so many unknowns, there were no guarantees.

I had to remind myself of other times when I had to let go and place it in the Lord’s hands. Granted, I could not remember previous circumstances as intense as this was. However, I knew I had to follow through. I had to keep my eyes on the Lord.

I soon encountered what is written in John 14:27, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” I got to a point where I still did not have all the answers, but I was no longer being beaten and battered by all the uncertainty.

We have all had times in our lives when we faced overwhelming turmoil. When we came through it, we may have attributed the success to ourselves or some place else. I have thought back and cannot honestly figure out how some situations resolved themselves. It was like the clouds suddenly parted and the sun began shining.

We need to realize that God is present more we care to admit. He is a force that can keep us steady and a safe haven no matter what the world throws at us. Just as in Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

When I keep my eyes on the Lord and His spirit in my heart, I can feel a peace no matter the situation. If you have ever felt it as well, you know you can’t really explain why you feel calm. All the negative flows over and past us, without any effect. No toss, no turn, and no anxious spiral of death.

The words from Isaiah 41:10 could be inscribed on His anchor that is attached to me, Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

These are only a few of the scriptures that assure us that our Lord is with us. He is protecting and guiding us through everything we face. We just have to remember and believe it. If none of these are the scriptures that are inscribed on your anchor, find the one that is, and memorize it. So, when the next storm comes, speak those words to remind yourself who is your anchor.

RISE TO DO YOUR BEST

You hear the fierce wind blowing and the waves crashing against the bow,
We are taking on so much water we feel nothing can save us now.

Everything is picking up speed and all my actions are hurried,
Nothing seems to be falling into place and the outcome has me worried.

We are getting tossed in the air and then heaved to the right,
As the waves get higher and the wind howls louder I have to hold on tight.

The world begins to spin around, I have no choice but to look toward the sky,
At first no words would come out, but Lord save me is what I cry.

My dear child I am right here beside you, do not panic or fret,
You have to feel my calm wash over you and finally take a breath.

No matter what storms you find yourself in, I will be your anchor,
Keeping you still to ride it on through and safe from the world’s rancor.

You will find guidance within my word and truths that bring you to me,
Knowing there’s a lamp to light your way making it easy to see.

Close your eyes and lay in my arms for as long as you need to rest,
Once he recover and feel my strength you can Rise To Do Your Best.
