WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND

Lamentations 3:22-23(NKJV)

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.”

Did you ever wake up on a Monday morning and wish it was already Friday? Maybe as the week wears on you begin to get less work done and spend more time on planning what you will be doing on the weekend? How about starting the celebrating on Friday night and everything is a blur until you crawl out of bed on Sunday afternoon?

I remember way back in school, we would drag ourselves in on Monday and already were talking about the end of the week. Even after graduation I shifted to a job that had a rotating schedule. We called the last day of work before those days off our Friday and usually planned accordingly.

It was even better when our days off fell on the weekend, so we would sometimes double down on the nature of the activities. Even later in life while raising a family, no matter the schedule, we always planned for what we wanted to do on the weekends. And if there was a holiday, that was just a bonus. I grew up with a song blasting from the radio on how everybody was working for the weekend.

I am not sure how things changed over the years, when was the weekend elevated to such a degree that it began to skew our societal mindset. Once upon a time the weekend was just a needed respite after a hard week of work for kicking back and relaxing. Maybe a trip to the lake or amusement park was thrown in here or there.

Now we see all the ads and social media posts to go bigger. Come on in for everything you need for that weekend project, let’s see if it’s possible to hit every club in the area in two nights, or feeling that a few hours of sleep on a return flight redeye will be sufficient before dragging in to work.

Sometimes those with families will spend all week finding a babysitter so they can cut loose or are booked for the next in an endless series of events or tournaments their child has to attend. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the wide world of sports, especially in the fall, when there are so many games to follow.

Far too often we can put God in the same box on the calendar where sometimes He fits in the schedule for you to attend church and sometimes He doesn’t. There are the regular church goers that make fun of C and E Christians. They only attend church on Christmas and Easter. Are Christians that only look at church like checking a box any better?

Hey, I’m a good person and I make it to church on Sunday. Well mostly every Sunday. Far too often many forget that there are six more days in the week and nothing is planned for the Lord on any other day. No prayer, no devotions, and not even any Christian music. The plans of the secular world overtake any thoughts about God.

We should all know that the seven-day concept starts at the beginning of the Bible. God was busy every day creating the world in which we live in. Yes, it does say they He rested on the seventh day, but He is always active in our world. Just as we saw Jesus active everyday glorifying the Father, even on the Sabath.

If God and Jesus are active in the world and our lives every day, then we should not relegate them to an occasional weekend visit. They are there for us through all circumstances, so we should be there for them. Giving praise through every event in our lives. We should be planning our week around the Lord, not the weekend.

In the opening scripture Solomon very eloquently puts it that me are not consumed for our sins because of the Lord’s mercies, and these mercies are new every morning. He goes on to remind us that His compassion and faithfulness don’t fail us. These are assurances that should excite and energize us more than anything else in this world.

We should respond as David did in Psalm 5:3, “My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.” It does not matter what is happening in our lives, we should be looking up to the Lord every morning as we pray. But we don’t have to just stop with the morning, we can talk to the Lord at any time throughout our day.

We see this in Joshua 1:8, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” The Bible helps us do so much more than prayer alone.

When we read and meditate on the word daily, we will find more of the answers that God has for us, along with the strength that we need in all situations. If we are not daily coming to the Lord, then we are missing out on so much that He has for us. Too many little things will get overlooked.

So, we have to stop selfishly planning for the weekends that may include a brief visit to church and follow Jesus’ word in Luke 9:23, “Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” Jesus was giving the disciples and those present a choice and we also have to decide what kind of Son or Daughter of the great King that we are going to be.

TOGETHER WE CAN BRING HOME A WIN

My week is just starting and I can’t wait for it to end,
Already regretting all the stress and the drama that may descend.

My boss could be on a rampage or my car can decide to quit,
Another rain storm is coming and now my new appointment won’t fit.

Like a building crescendo I ride the wave up to its peak,
Until I finally find peace when I go to church at the end of the week.

Lord, the roller coaster of emotion is getting harder to take,
Hiding behind a tranquil facade that I can no longer fake.

Dear child that is because you only grant me a weekend visit,
That is why the turmoil the rest of the week never seems to quit.

I am there walking with you every day to help you find peace,
I can carry some of your burden so you’re chaos will decrease.

When you relegate me to just one day there is not a lot I can do,
Pray and spend time in my word and the storms will die down for you.

It doesn’t matter the day or the situation you find yourself in.
My love for you is unending and Together We Can Bring Home A Win.
